My first professional job out of college was working as a case manager in a medium security juvenile correctional facility. What a learning experience! These kids had in addition to the regular teen angst some unrealistic ideas about what made them a man. If only they were tough enough, angry enough, cruel enough. Some of those kids were truly mean. Many of them were misguided.
Whenever I see a teen boy with his teen boy “costume” on- hoodie, wild tee, and/or sagging pants, I think of those kids from back then. They taught me so much more than I ever could have taught them. And I am truly grateful for the opportunity.

I asked him, “Hey, Dude! Let me take your picture.” He just shrugged and said, “Okay!”
