Tiny Butterfly: May 3, 2021

This is without a doubt the smallest butterfly that I’ve ever photographed. It was rather disheartening because in a huge field of clover, this was the only insect (besides a solitary wasp) that I could see.

As this photo illustrates, this butterfly’s wingspan was hardly wider than a blade of grass. Interestingly, her wings were one color on the outside and another on the inside!
This photo illustrates even better the two-colored nature of its wings.
And now we have three!

While I’m fairly sure this butterfly is a member of the Pieridae family, I’m afraid to go any further with identification. It was most insistent about staying in the grassy area of the field. It’s quite a bit smaller than the common cabbage butterfly. If anybody out there knows for certain what it is, please feel free to enlighten the rest of us!

I was born at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. I find inspiration in the lives of so many people from Joan of Arc to Oscar Wilde. While my primary avocation is photography, I also enjoy philosophy, theology and most of all, history. My beloved wife, Robin Anne Smith, who passed away in 2013 is an inspiration to me. My beloved partner, Dana is also a great support and inspiration to me. I'd be remiss if I did not mention my cats: Maxwell, Nigel, Pirouette and GarGar.
