Turkey buzzards, October 10, 2019. Another photograph from my chance encounter on October 10, 2019 in Arnold, Maryland. This morning, as I was driving down the road, I saw a large bird-of-prey with a tiny morsel in its talons. It was flying rather low, but I was unable to identify its prey. It brought to mind a line from an old movie called, “The Night of the Hunter,” starring Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum. Lillian Gish’s character is standing on the front porch and she sees a night owl capture a bunny rabbit. In response, she says, “The world is hard on little things.”

I know that I’ve posted pictures of individual sparrows on this part of the roof before, but I can’t find any evidence of group shots. A few days back, I posted a photo of a couple of sparrows that were in a little tree in the parking lot of the grocery store that I frequent. I hope these little guys are suitable for Granny Shot It’s Bird of the Day Challenge (aka BOTD.) I hope also that everybody had a great Halloween! –Russell

College Creek, near US Naval Academy, October 30, 2019. From a distance, the view from the bridge at Annapolis Road is quite charming. Up close is a different story. Because of pollution (fertilizer, run-off from the streets, etc.) the water is quite murky. I will spare you a photograph of that because these are supposed to be beautiful photographs. This is the bridge over Spa Creek at Compliance Street. Here is where I go when I want to commune with my friend Ollie the Osprey. I haven’t seen him the last few times I’ve been here. I do hope that he is okay. If you see him, please tell him I said hi!
If you squint, you can see the water! I took this picture yesterday. I had to tiptoe at the side of a brick wall to get this shot. This quaint little footbridge can be found on the campus of Saint John’s College, here in Annapolis.
