Ragtag Daily Prompt: Vacation

GarGar 1GarGar 2GarGar 3It had taken the Queen three days to reach the Shrine to Saint Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. Once there, she cast off the garments of nobility and donned the simple habit of a novitiate. In her hands, she held a prayer book and a rosary. For hours each day, she spent her time in contemplation and prayer, on her knees in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament, or alone in her bedchamber.

To those ignorant of the rigors of the Queen’s devotions, it might seem as though she were taking a vacation, but nothing could be further from the truth. During her stay at the Shrine, she would eschew all meats, all alcoholic beverages, music and dance, fine clothes, even sleep was sacrificed to God in pursuit of divine enlightenment. Four hours after retiring for the night, she would awaken to go to the chapel with the Sisters of Saint Jude and pray with them in their chapel which was cold and dank.
