Ragtag Daily Prompt: Damp

Nobody knew his real name, but the people called him Diego Diablo. Operating from the dense forests south of the capital, he was a highway robber with panache. He always thanked his victims for parting with gold and he never approached a woman in an untoward manner. His head and face were always concealed by a black caul, so nobody, perhaps with the exception of his henchmen, knew what he looked like.

The very day His Majesty passed away, GarGar was en route to his estates in the country. Traveling with just a couple of companions, GarGar wanted to make good time. Because it was a damp, chilly morning, he wore his finest coat, embroidered with gold thread and fashioned with big white pearls. Around the collar was ermine fur.

Unfortunately, his journey was interrupted by Monsieur Diablo and crew. First they pulled a rope across the road in order to halt the horses. Then from the tree branches above and from the hedges on each side, half a dozen men or more appeared with swords drawn. While GarGar continued to sit high in his saddle, his poor valet fainted outright and fell from his mount.
