The demands of the protestors were simple: the immediate marriage of Princess Pirouette and GarGar, le comte des Deux Chats; and the expulsion of the prime minister from the King’s councils. “GarGar!” The people shouted. “Pirouette!” Was the chorus. “GarGar! Pirouette!” The old King and his councilors were closeted in the throne room, while most of the court had gathered in the ballroom. As for the two lovebirds, the were secreted in Pirouette’s bedchamber, laughing with her ladies, singing songs and dancing.
The old King pulled on the prime minister’s arm, “What do they want? What do they want?” He said of the crowds outside the palace. “They want you to let the Princess and le comte to wed.” The prime minister paused, “And they want you to expel me from the palace.”
“Expel you? Well, then how will you be able to help me with government?” Asked the King incredulously.
