The official word was that Gargar, le comte des deux chats and Princess Pirouette were betrothed. The day of the announcement, they stood on the balcony of the palace and greeted well-wishers from all over the city. Privately, the Princess vowed never to marry anybody, least of all her bumbling cousin, Gargar. Be that as it may, they were both good at obeying orders, so there they stood, mute and expressionless, as their subjects crowded the courtyard, waving scarves, banners and the like, rapturous at the site of such two beautiful beings with such a promising future.
