There was a window in Queen Pirouette’s bedchamber that opened into a courtyard where her children often played. She could watch them as they scampered about. Sometimes she would shout encouragement at them, but usually she would content herself with just watching them in silence. The motherly bond that she felt at such moments transcended anything else in her life. This bond was infrangible and unchangeable.
