When Queen Pirouette opened her eyes, all she could see at first was a blur of bright colors. As she slowly regained consciousness, she realized that all those colors were the garments of the people crowded into her bedroom. Her head pounded. Her mouth was dry. She wanted to speak, but didn’t seem to have enough breath to utter a sound, not even a whimper.
Is this what it is like to be dead? She asked herself.
“There, there, my darling…” It was the voice of King GarGar, her husband, her soulmate. “You’ve had a nasty fall. The horse…” His voice trailed off, not wanting to say the words.
“Is this what the Cardinal meant when he spoke of ‘spiritual experiences?'” Pirouettes first words in two days were of her old enemy, the Cardinal, long dead.
